A Broad Abroad
Part travel memoir, part how-to guide
What's it like to pick up stakes and move halfway
across the world all by yourself? That's exactly what
I did in 1986, when I spent my junior year abroad in
Canterbury, England.
At that time, there were no books that were specifically
about the study-abroad experience. More than 25 years
after I returned from my life-changing stay in England,
I realized those publications still didn't exist.
So I decided to write the kind of book I wished had been
available to me as a college student. What I had in mind
was something that was part travel memoir and part
how-to guide. It would tell my own personal story, but it
would also contain practical straight-talk and tips to help
today's college students navigate their own year abroad.
The result was A Broad Abroad: Surviving (and Loving) Your
Junior Year on Foreign Soil.
